Stellar Sex and Solitude

Mark D. Stucky

“Stellar Sex and Solitude” humorously imagines cosmology as a passionate love affair, lonely estrangement, and jealous revenge.

Big Bang’s primordial orgasm

spawned all things universal.

Burning plasma seared molecular souls

until fully satiating quantum lust.

After expanding across millions of millennia,

loneliness became cosmically comprehensive

when immense distances lay

between solitary stars.

From monogamous orbits,

faithful planets never strayed,

hurtling through space in chaste harmony

with far-flung planetary neighbors.

But icy-hearted comets,

in cold stellar wastelands,

yearned for jealous vengeance

upon warmer climates,

triggering fly-by extinctions

of prehistoric life on earth.
